Born and raised in Ridgway, PA, the daughter of Fred and Ada (Nelson) Loncoske, Vivian was the fourth of seven children (six girls and one boy), all of whom pre-deceased her. At age 16 she won a scholarship to attend Thiel College in Greenville, PA, where she cherished her participation in the French and Drama Clubs and, her senior year, was elected ‘May Queen”. At the time of her death, Vivian was the oldest living alumna of Thiel College. Upon graduation, she was recruited for a foreign language teaching position in East Brady, PA, by her future beloved husband, Bill, aka Pat.

Both teachers in the same school at the time, Bill and Vivian married in June of 1938, and subsequently lived in Doylestown, PA, as well as in Belvidere, Livingston, Glassboro, and Boonton, NJ before finally settling in Morristown, in 1979. During World War II, Bill was a Naval Commander in the Pacific, and Vivian drove cross-country to spend as much time with her husband as possible, living the latter portion of 1944 in Southern California. In 1972, Vivian and Bill built a summer home in Maine, where they loved their time in nature as well as the opportunity to entertain friends and family. She continued to spend a portion of each year in Center Lovell, ME for the last 45 years of her life.

Vivian loved teaching and volunteering her time enriching the lives of others. Before the war, she tutored and cared for the children of famed author Pearl S. Buck, and returned later to teaching in Livingston. In addition, she taught Sunday School classes and led Girl Scout troops; was a member of P.E.O. Chapter H and Eastern Star. She knit scarves and caps for the Seaman’s Institute in New York City, and was an avid crossword puzzle enthusiast. Later in life, both Bill and Vivian volunteered their time with Morristown Memorial Hospital, Morris County Literacy Program, Meals-on-Wheels, the Presby-Aires (an interfaith singing group), Rotary and her church.

Vivian was the beloved wife of 64 years to the late Dr. William Lowther. She was the loving mother of Carolyn Lowther and Vicky Willson and her husband Ken. She is also survived by her cherished granddaughter Kate Willson and her husband Jack McDonald. In lieu of flowers, donations in Vivian’s memory may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Boonton, P.O. Box 157, Boonton, NJ 07005 ( please reference the Bill & Vivian Lowther Scholarship Fund ); the Charlotte Hobbes Public Library (227 Main St, Lovell, ME 04051); or the Literacy Volunteers of Morris County (36 South Street, Morristown, NJ 07960).
