Tom Snedeker-Green Beret

Thomas Edward Snedeker, 73, passed away on December 10, 2014 at his home in Basking Ridge, NJ with Valerie, his loving wife of 50 years by his side.

Snedeker was a member of the 11th Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, and served as the jumpmaster for his unit. After leaving the Army, he raised his family in Summit, NJ, and spent several decades working in Manhattan in the insurance industry, before starting his own firm. In his retirement, he became a lacrosse referee for the NJLOA, and rose to become one of the top-rated officials in the state. Earlier, as President of the Summit Lacrosse Club in the 1980s, he helped build a tradition of success that the city proudly carries on today. A 1964 graduate of St. Michael’s College, he loved his family, the beach, fishing, and telling great jokes.

He was an eight-year cancer survivor. Throughout it all he was supported by his wife Valerie, who became his sole caregiver. He was active in Republican politics, the Jaycees, as well as numerous municipal campaigns in New Providence and Summit. Additionally, he was a chief in the YMCA Indian Princesses with his daughter and Indian Guides with his son. He was an active parishioner in St. Teresa’s Church, where he participated in pre Cana and Renew. Wherever he went he had a joke to tell and made his friends laugh and feel loved. he will be missed by us all.

Tom is survived by his wife Valerie, his son Thomas of Arlington, VA, his daughter Stephanie of Neptune City, NJ, two grandchildren Sophie and Tommy, and a sister Judi Ingraham of Huddleston, VA.

He is pre-deceased by his brother Clifford, a former Mercer County Freeholder and State Assemblyman during the Kean Administration.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Teresa’s Church, 306 Morris Ave, Summit, NJ on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 9:30 am. The celebrant is an old family friend, Father Sean Cunneen.
