Stanley Metcalf Bess, 80, of Morristown and Mantoloking, formerly of Chatham, passed away at home on Monday, December 7, 2015.

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, Stan earned a BS in business from the University of Utah, where he was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity. He lived in Denver, Colorado for three years, where he met his future wife Pamela Schmidt. They lived for 40 years in Chatham until 2005, when they began to split their time between Morristown and Mantoloking. In 1988, Stan retired from the J.C. Penney Company after 20 years, and subsequently was an active private investor. Previously, Stan worked for the Mountain States Telephone Company and later for NJ Bell. A veteran of the United States Army 10th Mountain Division, Stan served in Germany in 1956-1957. A member of the Bay Head Yacht Club, Stan was previously the Chairman of the Board of Chatham Savings and Loan, a United Methodist Homes board member, Chatham PTA President, and member of the Chatham Fish & Game Club and The Anglers Club of New York. Stan was an avid fly fisherman, and as a saxophonist in his younger years, a music aficionado. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and will be missed for his quick wit and dry sense of humor.

Predeceased by his father Leland Metcalf, mother and adoptive father June and Ellis Bess; and sister Kathleen Astin; Stanley is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pamela; children Cynthia Bess Moran, Andrew S. Bess and his wife Christina T, and Amy K. Bess and her husband John Linn; grandchildren Meghan Moran, Erin Moran, Hazel Bess, and Nathaniel Bess; and brother E. Lawrence Bess.

A Memorial Service will be held at the Chatham United Methodist Church, 460 Main Street, Chatham, on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the church; St. Gregory’s Pantry, 804 Bay Ave., Point Pleasant, NJ, 08742, or to a charity of your choice.
