Sophia D. Freed

Sophia Disston Freed passed away peacefully on Thur. April 26, 2018 at Victoria Mews Assisted Living facility in Boonton Township, NJ. She was 101 years old.

Sophy was born in Philadelphia PA on December 10, 1916 to Jessie Williamson and Hamilton Disston.  She was the second of eight children.  She graduated from Springside School in Chestnut Hill PA.  She married David Burns Freed on November 10, 1939.  They had four children.

She was predeceased by her husband David in 1998, her son William in 2000, her daughter Anne MacGonigal in 2017 and her granddaughter Heather MacGonigal in 2018.

She is survived by her daughter Caroline List and husband William of Madison NJ, her son David Freed Jr. of Olympia WA., her daughter in law Joyce and husband Anker Winther of Ringoes NJ, 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Sophy and her husband were always very active in the Presbyterian Church where they lived. She was a Sunday school teacher while Dave was a member of the Session at the church in Montclair, NJ.  She was and ordained deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Boonton NJ.  She was active in the Presbyterian Women’s Association, attended bible study regularly and was an usher and greeter at church services.  She was an active member of the PresbyAires, a group of singers who entertained seniors at various assisted living facilities and brought joy to many people.

Sophy was a teacher at the United Cerebral Palsy School in Orange, NJ. She was especially good with art and creative projects.  She was also an amazing sewer.  She made everything from clothing to doll clothes to quilts for her home and charity.   She spent many hours with a needle in hand creating fine needlework and silk embroideries.

A Memorial Service will be held for her on Sat. May 12, 2018 at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church of Boonton, 513 Birch St., Boonton NJ 07005. The service will be followed by the interment and a reception.
