Sarah Aulet
10/02/1924 - 10/19/2017

Sarah Rosario Angelica Ortiz y Candelario Viuda de Aulet passed away on October 19, 2017 at the age of 93. Known to her family as “Nanny” or “Saro,” she was mother, grandmother, aunt, and dear friend to many.

A visitation will be held on Monday, October 23, 2017, from 2-4p.m. and 7-9p.m. at the Bradley, Brough, & Dangler Funeral Home, 299 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, at the Shrine of St. Joseph, 1050 Long Hill Road, Stirling, NJ at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shrine of St. Joseph Puerto Rican relief fund.

Sarah was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico, on October 2, 1924. She lost her father Gil at the age of eight and her mother Monserrate at the age of 10. After being orphaned, she was raised with love by her aunt and uncle in Yauco, growing up with her cousin Rosalina, who was like a sister to her. At 17, she migrated to New York City, where she lived with her brothers and met Francisco Arroyo Aulet, who she married on March 9, 1946. After her husband’s death, she raised her two daughters and grandson on her own.

She is pre-deceased by her husband and by her daughter Vernah Grace Aulet. She is survived by her daughter Janet and her husband Carl; her grandchildren, James, Ben Francisco, Jo, David and his wife Maribeth, Valerie and her wife Joanna; and a great-grandchild to come.

A deeply spiritual person, over the years she was a part of many Christian communities, including Holy Cross Parish, Fordham prayer group in Bronx, NY, the Christian Community of the Shrine of Saint Joseph, and St. Theresa’s prayer group. She worked for Schreiber and Company for many years and was a seamstress, a designer, and, above all, an artist, able to take simple materials and transform them into elegant garments and fine crafts. A lifelong learner, she studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology. She was a model for living with resilience in the face of adversity, and for finding strength and joy in family, love, and God.
