Russell A. Benigno

Russell A. Benigno, a resident of Chatham for over 55 years, died at his home at Sunrise Assisted Living in Madison on July 24, 2012. Born in West Hoboken, Mr. Benigno grew up in Union City, moving to Chatham in 1952.

 

Mr. Benigno proudly served in the US Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his military service in the Battle of the Bulge and Prisoner of War experience. He remained active in the Disabled American Veterans, serving as commander, and the VFW. He authored “Destiny”, a biography of his military experience that he shared with family, friends and classmates at Chatham High School.

 

A graduate of Clark University, Mr. Benigno was a cartographer with General Drafting Company for 35 years. Russell was a life long learner, an avid reader with a passion for history and film. During the 90s he attended Chatham High School through a program offered to senior citizens. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Chatham and volunteered at the Library of the Chathams.

 

He was the beloved husband of the late Ida Benigno. Loving father of RoseMary and Dan Fuss of Wellesley, MA and Valerie and Robert Olpp of Chatham. Cherished grandfather of Sean Quigley and his wife Kimberly of Hackensack, Kristin Russell and her husband Michael of Westfield, Daniel Fuss of New York City and the late Thomas Russell Fuss. Great-grandfather of Katelyn Grace Quigley. Beloved brother of John and Dolores Benigno and his late twin sister, Rosalie Pedoto.

 

The family would like to thank all the compassionate people who cared for Russell over the last few years.
