Robert John Cassels, Sr.

Loving Husband, Father & Grandfather

Robert John “Chino” Cassels, 76, of Whippany, New Jersey passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014. Born in Washington Heights, New York and raised in Orange, New Jersey, Bob lived in West Orange and Livingston, New Jersey before settling in Whippany, New Jersey in 1974.

Bob, a CPA, had an unmatched work ethic, whether in one of his offices—West Orange, Cranford, Long Island—or sitting at the kitchen table with a steaming cup of tea long past midnight with a mechanical pencil in hand and an adding machine and spreadsheet in front of him.

Bob was a gardener of the best Jersey tomatoes. He was also a landscape architect-of-sorts: together, with Beth, Bobby, and Claudia, they turned an ordinary suburban backyard into an oasis.

When asked recently why he loved Beth, Bob simply said, “She’s so good.” When asked why Beth loved Bob, she said, “It was his eyes. They were kind.”

He was an idol to his daughter Karen, a buddy to his son Bobby, and a listener to his incessantly chatty daughter Maribeth.

He loved his granddaughters, Katelyn and Lauren. Anticipating the good times ahead, he bought an SUV with a running board to make it easier for their little legs and feet to hop in and a dvd player to keep them entertained on the way Down the Shore, to New Hampshire, and to Vermont.

A voracious reader, Bob and John would talk WWII lakeside in Vermont. Bob also loved to sing be it karaoke in his man cave or at parties, his favorite song—“Danny Boy”.

Predeceased by his father Michael and mothe Eleanor, Bob is survived by his brother Michael, his sister-in-law Mary Noreen and their children: Sean, Eileen, and Meghan; his sister Mary Frances, his brother-in-law Jim and their children: Jimmy and Christian; his brother-in-law Joe, his sister-in-law Fran and their children: Joseph, Brian, Michael, Patrick and Kevin; and his mother-in-law Helen Cohee, who recently said, “I lost my friend.”

He possessed humility and class.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, West Orange. Entombment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
