Robert Jay Bergmann
06/22/1935 - 02/23/2017

~~Robert Bergmann died February 23, 2017, at age 81. The Chatham resident was a big New York Giants and New York Mets fan. He enjoyed reading, going to concerts, working on his computer and later his iPad, keeping up with the stock market, and going to the theater at Drew University and the Paper Mill Playhouse. He was devoted to his wife, Kay, and had a cheerful disposition, a ready smile and endless patience. Perhaps most remarkable about Bob was his quiet ability to be an attentive and appreciative listener, nodding and smiling, as if urging others to feel good about themselves because he felt good about them himself. He worked for Engelhard Corp. for 40 years as a research chemist, which furthered his interest in the newspaper business. Bob was a one-time president of the New Providence Lions Club where he helped raise money for community service projects and other charitable endeavors. He was a graduate of Upsala College in New Jersey and had a master’s degree from Miami University in Ohio. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kathleen Bergmann; two stepchildren, Sandy Burr (Alan Willis) and Richard Burr (Susan Tompor) and two grandchildren, Matthew Burr and Devyn Willis. Donations in his memory can be made to the Chatham United Methodist Church, 460 Main St., Chatham, NJ 07928. A memorial service is planned at 10 a.m. on March 6 in the church
