Maxwell L. Gottstein
08/30/2011 - 08/11/2017

~~Maxwell Louis Gottstein died on August 11, 2017 in the arms of his parents at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Max was born on August 30, 2011 and was five years old.

Max was a spirited, happy, fun-loving, and imaginative little boy, who saw magic in both the world and in people. He loved rainbows, glitter, Pokemon, slime, dancing, making art and music, and creating imaginary worlds. When he grew up, Max wanted to be an inventor, a dragon, and, most of all, someone who “makes people laugh.” Max loved being in the company of others, be they family, friends, teachers, nurses, doctors, neighbors, or even strangers. He had an amazing ability to connect with people and make them feel special and loved, and as such, he was loved by so many in return.

Max battled cancer for most of his life–first retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, and then secondary leukemia. He will not be remembered as a cancer patient, however, but rather as someone who found joy no matter the circumstances, who inspired those around him with his strength, sense of humor, and love, and who shone brightly even on the darkest days.

Max is the cherished son of John and Kristen (Blanco) Gottstein, and the beloved brother of Alex, whom he admired and adored. He is so loved by his Goggi and Poppy, Dorothy and Louis Blanco, as well as his Aunt Katie Blanco and cousin Annabelle; his Uncle Ted and Aunt Aja Blanco, and cousins June and Cash. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, John and Julie Gottsetin, as well as his beloved Aunt Erika and Uncle Mike Parker and cousins Jackson and Sadie.

Max’s family are deeply grateful to their family, friends, community, church, and the many healthcare professionals who have supported them throughout the years. Gifts in Max’s honor may be made at www.give.chop.edu (please indicate that your donation is in memory of Max Gottstein.) These gifts will help fund a study of retinoblastoma and secondary cancers assisted by Max’s beloved oncologist, Dr. Ann Leahey.
