Mary M. Bernstein, (nee Rittershofer), 61, of Barnegat passed peacefully on March 21, 2017. Mary grew up in Union. Her passion as an educator began at St. Paul the Apostle School in Irvington where she taught grammar school. Shortly after marrying Mark Bernstein and moving to Brick, she taught at St. Joseph’s in Toms River. Mary moved to Point Pleasant, realizing her dream to raise a family in a small beach town. There she continued enriching the lives of her students, as well as her family and friends. Mary taught special education at All Saints in Manahawkin. Mary moved to the Barnegat before retiring last year. Mary was active in local politics as a means to serve her community. Mary had a strong love for all types of animals, especially dogs and rabbits. Mary is survived by her three sons, Joseph, Greg & Derek, their father Mark Bernstein, Her three beloved siblings, Eileen Tener, Kathryn Dymyd and William Rittershofer, as well as many nieces and nephews and her lifelong friend, Roseanne Jonson.
We invite everyone who loved Mary to the Bradley Haeberle & Barth Funeral Home, 1100 Pine Ave. Union, on Sunday, March 26, between the hours of 2PM and 7pm.
A Catholic Mass and Burial will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017, at 9:30 am at Holy Spirit Church, 971 Suburban Rd. Union. And Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington.
