Mary G Ackerman

~~ Mary Peace Gallitelli Ackerman of Sarasota FL, formerly of Springfield NJ, passed away in her 96th year on April 24, 2015.

Mary was born in Short Hills NJ on November 7,1918.

In 1942 she received a B.S. degree in Art from Newark State College. She completed her graduate studies at Kean College earning Masters Degrees in Elementary Education and her six-year level in Humanities. Early in her career she taught Art in both the Elizabeth and Millburn school systems. In the Springfield school system she taught Art and 5th grade until she retired in 1982 when she and her husband Calvin moved to Sarasota.

In retirement Mary pursued her life long passion of painting and sculpting exhibiting her work’s and winning awards and prizes for her stone and wood sculptures.

Ever the educator Mary found time to put her teaching skills to good use at the Senior Academy of USF and assisted with art classes on Long Boat Key.

She was a parishioner of St. Martha’s Catholic Church and became a Eucharistic minister and participated in many lay activities.

Predeceased by her husband Calvin G. Ackerman, daughter Susan P., sons Cal C. and Paul G. Ackerman, survived by her loving children Mary A. Ward (William A.) and Mark S. Ackerman, loving granddaughter Ashley S. Ackerman, loving siblings Anne V. Smith and Edward Gallitelli and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends. She will be deeply missed.

The family will receive friends on Friday, 5/29/15 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at Bradley Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, NJ.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, 5/30/15 at St. James the Apostle Church, 45 So. Springfield Ave., Springfield, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
