Mary D'Onofrio

~~Life-long resident Mary D’Onofrio passed away on November 18th. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church on Monday, November 21st at 10:00. Interment will follow at St. Teresa Cemetery in Summit. Friends are invited to visit at Bradley Smith and Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Avenue, Springfield on Sunday, November 20 from 3-7.

Mary was born on Spring Street in Millburn on September 24th, 1916. She celebrated her 100th birthday this year with family and friends. She leaves behind her son Joseph D’Onofrio, his wife Lori, a grand-daughter Michaela and a sister Annette O’Toole, as well as many nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was part of the large D’Onofrio, Petrillo, Cannizzo, Saggio, Adams, and O’Toole families.

Mary graduated from Millburn High School in 1935 and worked for General Motors in New York City. After marrying Leonard D’Onofrio, an Air Force flight instructor during WWII, the couple lived in Alabama briefly and then returned to Millburn where Mary was hired by the Millburn Township Board of Education. She worked in the personnel department for 28 years. Mary was a volunteer with Overlook Hospital’s Sewing Group making blankets for newborn babies and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and Life Lighters Club of Saint Rose of Lima Church for many decades. Mary was overjoyed to receive a letter from His Holiness Pope Francis on her 100th Birthday Celebration.
