Marilyn Dee Shelley, a long-time resident of Chatham Township, passed away on Saturday, May 4, 2019, in the hospice unit of Morristown Medical Center.  She was 81.

A 1959 graduate of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA, Dee earned her Masters Degree in Spanish at Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT, following her studies at the University of Madrid.  She taught high school Spanish in Tenafly, Chatham, Whippany Park and Hanover Park.  Her last and favorite teaching position was as Adjunct Professor of Spanish at Seton Hall University in South Orange.

Dee was actively involved in the Madison Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood.  She was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, where she participated in Bible Study and served terms as elder and deacon.  She volunteered at the Community Soup Kitchen and Family Promise of Morris County and the Chatham Hills Care Center, playing the piano for monthly church services.

Other special interests included attending Bucknell social and sporting events with her husband Penn, reading, classical music, yoga, tennis, biking, walking and travel.

Dee was born in Bicknell, Indiana on September 5, 1937, to the late Elmer and Gwenevieve Wampler Pieper and sister to the late Carla Wolf. Dee is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Penn Shelley of Chatham Township; her sons Mark and his wife Julie of Broomfield, Colorado, Scott of Summit and Douglas and his wife Kim of Morristown; and eight beloved grandchildren: Kathleen, Callyn, Maureen, Clarissa, Christopher, Cameron, Meghan and Liam and step-granddaughter, Julie.

In lieu of flowers, contribution may be made in her memory to the Memorial Fund of the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township.
