Lois Monti

Lois Monti, of Chatham, NJ, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2014. She was 65 years old.

Born Lois Tafaro to Robert and Lucile Tafaro on August 11, 1948 in East Orange, Lois grew up in Summit with her five brothers and sisters She married her husband, George Monti, in 1977, and they moved to Chatham in 1984. Lois and George raised their two children, Julie and Robert, together in Chatham before George passed away in 1998.

Education was always important to Lois. She earned her Bachelors Degree in Spanish from the College of St. Elizabeth before going on to complete both a Masters in Spanish from the University of Kentucky and a Masters in Urban Studies from New Jersey City University—all while working full time and raising her family. Lois also held a number of teaching certifications and for the last 15 years taught English as a Second Language to students at Jefferson School in Summit, NJ.

Lois will be remembered as a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister. She was a woman of strong faith. Her warm and friendly personality was evident to all who encountered her, and she relished spending time with family and friends. She had a deep-seated commitment to her role as an educator. This resulted in her being recognized in 2013 with the “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” Award at the Jefferson School for her dedication to her students, and her enthusiasm for her work.

Lois is survived by her children, Julie Monti and Robert Monti, and her sisters and brothers, Susan Quick, Robert Tafaro, Claudia Bush, Stephen Tafaro, and Nicholas Tafaro.

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation for Lois on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 2-6 PM at the Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, located at 345 Main Street in Chatham, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 6 at 9:30 AM at St. Teresa of Avila Church, located at 306 Morris Avenue in Summit, NJ. Interment will follow at St. Teresa of Avila Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lois’ memory may be made to the Discalced Carmelites, 189 Madison Avenue, Morristown, NJ 07960.
