James R. “Gil” Gilmartin
Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather & Great-Grandfather
James R. “Gil” Gilmartin, 93, of Chatham Township, NJ, passed peacefully on June 20, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Son of Thomas Aloysius Gilmartin and Helena Gilmartin nee Rush, he was born in Erie, Pa., and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. where he attended Central Catholic High School.
In 1944-1947 Jim served during WWII in the US Merchant Marines. After the war Jim graduated from Carnegie Melon University with a BS degree in chemical engineering. For eight years he was employed as a chemical salesman for Pitt-Consol in Michigan and later relocated to New Jersey with Fischer Scientific for many years. In 1964, Jim continued as a salesman but on a totally different career path as a financial consultant for Merrill Lynch in Morristown, NJ. It was there that he exceeded his personal expectations and became a first vice president for the company. In addition to his work, he was active with the Kiwanis club of Morristown, organist/choir director 1957-1972 at St. Teresa in Summit, active member of Canoe Brook Country Club, promoter of Loyola Retreat House in Morristown, active member NJ Jazz Society and the American Red Cross volunteering as a driver for Meals on Wheels. He thoroughly enjoyed the game of golf and playing the piano and played as often as possible. He even took up horseback riding winning blue ribbons in the family classes. He loved to read.
Jim lived in Summit, NJ for 60 years, before moving to Chatham Township, NJ 17 years ago. He is pre-deceased by his first wife, Lois Murphy Gilmartin. Jim is survived by his second wife Anita Campagna Gilmartin, daughters, Suzanne, Christine, Cynthia/son-in-law David Hill, Erin and son, James R. Jr. 10 grandchildren; Derek(Sonata), Edward (Morgan), Bridget, Rachel (Tony), Dana and Catherine Uttal, Karl, Erik, Lois, and Emma von Haas and 2 great-grandchildren: Irelyn and Brooks.
Jim’s love and devotion to his family and his extended family was paramount and constantly exhibited until the time of his passing. His generosity and compassion has been and will continue to be felt by many.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 9:30 am. Interment St. Teresa’s Cemetery. Visiting hours, Friday from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Bradley Brough & Dangler Funeral Home, 299 Morris Ave. Summit, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jim’s name may be made to: Loyola Retreat House or St. Teresa of Avila Church.
