Gastone P. Bello

~~BELLO, Gastone Pietro Ruggiero — born January 15, 1931 in Trieste, Italy to Umberto Bello and Paola Viezzoli Bello — died peacefully at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey soon after having suffered a massive stroke. He is survived by his son Mark Philip Bello (Jenny), his daughter Karen Bello Nowakowski (Michael), his granddaughters, Elizabeth Bello Nowakowski, Anna Bello Nowakowski and Leni Bello Nowakowski, his longtime companion Janice Bates and his ex-wife Ottilie Brechner Bello. Gastone earned a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Trieste. He spent his early career as a research chemist at Montecatini, SpA, in Terni, Italy and then in executive positions at Geigy Corporation in Ardsley, New York and Ciba-Geigy in Summit, New Jersey as Senior Vice President of Technical Operations and a member of the Management Committee. After his retirement from Ciba-Geigy, Gastone traveled to Russia, appointed by President Bill Clinton, to a task force charged with educating pharmaceutical entities there about the principles of materials management with respect to pharmaceutical distribution. He then worked with Algos Corporation, a startup company whose products were geared solely toward the physical delivery of pain management medications, ultimately securing substantial financing and enabling the company to go public. He also held several patents. Gastone had a great love and knowledge of classical music and was an avid and skilled skier, runner, sailor and filmmaker. He was deeply loved and admired by his family, friends and colleagues. He will be profoundly missed. A memorial service will be held at Bradley, Brough and Dangler Funeral Home (299 Morris Ave. Summit, NJ) on Thursday, December 28 at 12:00pm. Friends are invited to visit from 10:30am-12:00pm prior to the service.
