Frederick W. Kanner

Frederick Wilkinson Kanner, 75, of Summit, New Jersey passed away suddenly on Friday, August 3, 2018 at his home.

Fred was born on April 25, 1943 in New York City, New York. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John and Carmen (nee Wilkinson) Kanner.

Fred received his Bachelor of Science in Economics from the University of Virginia in 1965, which is also the year he married his beloved wife Carol. He furthered his education at Georgetown Law, where he worked on the Georgetown Law Journal, and earned his Juris Doctor in 1968.

In 1967, Fred worked as a summer lawyer at the New York City law firm Dewey Ballantine LLP, which he joined full time upon his graduation, and where he had a long and illustrious career until retiring as Partner in 2009. While at Dewey Ballantine, Fred served as the Chairman of the Corporate Finance Group for more than 15 years, and was a recognized authority on capital markets financing, securities law, and corporate governance. He later became a Consultant at Covington & Burling LLC, and recently served on the Board of Directors of E*TRADE and Financial Guaranty Insurance Company.

Fred was a member of Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, NJ, Ekwanok Country Club in Manchester, VT, and The Landings Club in Savannah, GA. He was a longtime member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, where he made many of his lifelong friends. He also served on the Board of Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ, and performed pro bono work for the Center for Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University.

Fred loved rooting for the New York Giants and New York Yankees, playing golf, skiing, and traveling. Above all, he loved spending time with his cherished family and the friends that he made everywhere he went.

Fred was a truly genuine and down-to-earth man who was adored by his family and friends for his boundless enthusiasm, endless energy, unwavering optimism, and ever-ready sense of humor.

Fred is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Gibson Kanner. He was the beloved father of Kimberly Meisner (Thomas Meisner) and their children, Isabel and Maxwell; Elizabeth Kanner and children, Hudson and Leonardo Till; and Catherine Spath (Dan Spath) and their children, Rosemary and Edward. In addition, he is survived by his sister, Regina Jugovich (John Jugovich) and their children, Emma and Abigail.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bradley, Brough & Dangler Funeral Home, 299 Morris Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901, to be followed in the fall with a celebration of his life. Cremation will be private. A Memorial Service will be held 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Calvary Episcopal Church, 31 Woodland Ave, Summit, NJ 07901.
