Engineer, Marine, Public Servant

On Wednesday, February 8th, Frank H. Lehr passed away at 91. Frank was born in Easton, PA the son of Francis and Sadie Lehr. He joined the US Marine Corps as a young man and was stationed in China. Returning to the States, he attended Penn State, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 1950. While at Penn State, he met and married the love of his life, Veronica. The couple moved to Summit, NJ and Frank continued his education at NCE, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering while at the same time working for Central Railroad of New Jersey, Arthur G. McKee and Co. and Jersey Testing Laboratories. During these years, Frank also was both recalled to active duty and involved in the Marine Corps Reserve from which he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. In 1957, Frank founded his own civil engineering firm Frank H. Lehr Associates, eventually moving the firm to East Orange. Frank also became interested in politics, serving in Summit as Councilman, Council President and Mayor and also was elected to the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders, eventually becoming Chairman. Frank was the recipient of many awards – both in his engineering and public servant roles.

Frank was predeceased by his wife Veronica and his son Frank F. Lehr, by his parents and his stepmother Evelyn Lehr, and by his sister Joan Lehr Haring. He is survived by his daughters Diane C. Lehr of Florida and Janice Lehr Sullivan (Michael) of New Jersey; by his daughter-in-law Debra Lehr of Ohio as well as by his beloved grandchildren Colin, James & Brenna Sullivan as well as Grace and Frank Lehr and Josh Spector. He also is survived by his sister Arlene Lehr McCullough (George) and many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 10:45 am at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Summit. Interment St. Teresa’s Cemetery. Visiting hours, Monday, 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Bradley Brough & Dangler Funeral Home, 299 Morris Ave., Summit.
