Florence C. Becker

~~Florence C. Becker of Chatham, New Jersey passed away peacefully from complications of lymphoma on Monday, July 13, 2015 at Morristown Medical Center at the age of 73.

She was born in Toledo, Ohio, and raised in Palos Park, Illinois, where she graduated from Carl Sandburg High School in 1959. In Chicago, Mrs. Becker worked for Peoples Gas and attended DePaul University.

Mrs. Becker met her husband, Brian, in Northlake, Illinois, and they married in 1969. Shortly after, they moved to Brooklyn Heights, New York, where they enjoyed the city life.

Planning to raise a family, they moved to Chatham, New Jersey, in 1973, where she became a general manager for the National Educational Music Company located in Summit, New Jersey.

Mrs. Becker was an active member of her neighborhood and community. She was a past president of the Chatham League of Women Voter, an active member of the PTO, and a Troop Committee member for Boy Scout Troop 8. An avid supporter of the Chatham public school system, she supported fundraisers such as the Pancake Breakfast and Funtastic Fair and organized Colonial Day and Science Day at Washington Avenue School. She briefly worked as a support staff member at Chatham High School.

More recently, Mrs. Becker became a certified master gardener from the Rutgers Cooperative Research & Extension and volunteered for the Frelinghuysen Arboretum help line. She was active in Chatham Garden Club and took great pleasure in working in her own garden as well as the Chatham community garden. Mrs. Becker also enjoyed volunteering for the Library of the Chathams Annual Book Sale, working as a Morris County poll worker, and organizing the Unitarian Church in Summit’s annual homeless families program over the holidays.

Mrs. Becker is preceded in death by mother and father Anne Balasz and John Tarsek of Toledo, Ohio as well as uncles, Nicholas and John Tarsek, and namesake, Aunt Florence.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years, Brian, and two beloved sons, David and Steven, as well as her Aunt Margaret Balasz and cousins of Oregon, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church in Summit, 4 Waldron Ave, Summit, NJ 07901 on Sunday, July 26, at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Becker was a breast cancer survivor of over 30 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Florence Becker’s memory to the American Cancer Society (800-227-2345), the Morris County Interfaith Food Pantry (973-538-8049), or the Raptor Trust (908-647-2353).

Interment will be at Fairmount Cemetery, Chatham, New Jersey, at a later date.
