Elvira A. Koury
11/30/1956 - 11/29/2019

Elvira A. Koury, 62, of Chatham, NJ, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, November 29, 2019, one day before her 63rd birthday.

Elvira was born on November 30, 1956, in San Bartolomeo in Galdo, Italy. She was the youngest of five children born to the late Umberto and Angelina Carlone. Her family immigrated to the United States in 1967, when Elvira was 11 years old, and they lived in Millburn, NJ. Elvira graduated from Millburn High School in 1975 and moved back to Italy with her parents. She returned to the United States in 1979, where she was married and raised her two daughters in Cranford, NJ and later, Chatham, NJ.

Elvira had a strong passion for language and culture. She was fluent in English, Italian, Spanish, and French and earned her Certificate in Translation Practice from New York University in 2009. For many years, she practiced this enthusiasm as a private language tutor for both adults and children, a freelance translator and interpreter, and a volunteer language tutor for the English as a Second Language program at the Connection (a non-profit community service organization in Summit, NJ).

Elvira was immensely proud of her family and greatly enjoyed spending time with her daughters and granddaughters. She treasured every moment she had with her granddaughters – holding them in her arms, singing and dancing with them, reading to them, feeding them and teaching them Italian.

Elvira loved the ocean, the sand and the sun, and spent many happy hours at the Jersey shore and in Florida with her friends and family. Those who knew her will remember her for her silly sense of humor, endless compassion, and unique ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds and make them feel valued.

Elvira is survived by her daughters, Christina Koury (Gregory Bilse), and Vanessa Van Dorn (Donald James); her siblings, Antonio Carlone (Lynn), Flora Scaturro (Paolo), and Rosaria Upchurch (Paul); her beloved grandchildren, Camille and Shelby; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Tatiana Pacifico (Elvira’s cousin), Bobbi Jean Wilson (Elvira’s best friend), and Jaime Friedland Vatter (Elvira’s niece) for the care, love and compassion given to Elvira.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Friday, December 6, 2019 at the Bradley, Brough & Dangler Funeral Home, located at 299 Morris Avenue, in Summit, NJ, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 8:00 PM. Private burial.
