Edward Joseph Harback, 96, of Pompano Beach, FL and formerly of Springfield, NJ passed away on Friday, February 21, 2014 at his home in Pompano Beach, FL.
Edward was born on August 21, 1917 in Glen Ridge, NJ. He was the son of Mrs. Mary Slinchak and step-son of John Slinchak.
Edward grew up in the Vailsburg section of Newark, NJ and was a graduate of West Side High School in 1934. He was a Seabee in the Navy during World War II and received a Good Conduct Medal in 1945.
He worked 40 years for Public Service Gas and Electric (PSE&G). He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Springfield, NJ. He loved gardening, traveling, and building things. He often traveled with his family in their travel trailer across the United States. He and his family built their vacation home in Brooks, Maine where he spent many summers with family. He loved the shore and in retirement enjoyed his home on the coast in Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Winifred Harback of Pompano Beach, FL. He was the father to three children; Joan Danner and husband Brian of Fairfield, NJ, son, Edward R. Harback and wife Loretta of Bridgewater, NJ, daughter, Virginia Fjermestad and husband Jerry of Orangeburg, NY. He was the loving grandfather to Jeannine and husband Tony Villa, Kenneth and wife Patricia Danner, Derek and wife Ericka Munzing, Erika and husband Doug Svolos, Kathryn Harback, Dana and Timothy Fjermestad and six great-grandchildren; Annabelle, Reese, Aidan, Clare, Jimmy, and Melody. He is also survived by his brother, Andrew and his wife Betty Slinchak. He was predeceased by his first wife, JoAnne Harback in 1984.
A visitation will be Friday, February 28, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, NJ 07081. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014 at St. James Catholic Church, 45 South Springfield Avenue, Springfield, New Jersey 07081.
