Edward “Ed” Almendinger (Coolest Dad and Grandpa)

Edward “Ed” Almendinger, 68 of Summit, NJ, passed away surrounded by family on February 14, 2017. Born in Bridgewater to the late John and Lily (Hahmel) Almendinger, Ed was a 1966 graduate of Sparta High School. Following high school Ed served in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1972 on the U.S.S. Laffey and proudly received the National Defense Service Medal. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Ed joined the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons, where he worked for 35 years, rising to chief of maintenance and repair, before retiring in 2003. It was there that he also met his loving wife and travel companion Norie.

A talented musician, Ed enjoyed a lifetime of jamming and playing gigs with his brothers. He also shared his talents on guitar at the Rest Stop Rejuvanate and the 5:30 Mass on Sundays at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Summit. Ed was pre-deceased in 2009 by his wife Norie Almendinger (nee Salcedo) and a brother Michael Almendinger in 1971. He is survived by his children Thom Almendinger (Melissa) of Hillsborough, Dawn Steinert (Jason) of Dexter, MI, Eric Salcedo (Kristine) of Summit, Karen Kelly (Tim) of Holmdel and Leslie Salcedo of Summit; his beloved grandchildren Olivia, Sophia, Gretchen, Cameron, Heidi, Aidan, Gabriella, Addison, Ethan and Tristan; his brothers John Almendinger (Shirley) of Dunellen and Bill Almendinger (Pattie) of Bedminster, and a sister Marianne Wlasiuk (Larry) of Tampa, Fla. as well as many nephews and nieces who loved him dearly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at 10:45 am at St. Teresa of Avila Church, 306 Morris Ave., Summit, NJ. Entombment Somerset Hills Memorial Park. Visiting hours, Monday, February 20, from 5 to 8 pm at the Bradley Brough & Dangler Funeral Home, 299 Morris Ave. Summit. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ed’s name may be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School (stjo.org), 1301 North Main St. Chamberlain, SD, 57325
