Long Time Short Hills Resident

Dr. Edmond H. Borneman, died February 28, 2016 at the age of 91. A fifty one year resident of Short Hills with his wife Joan Koll Borneman. Dr. Borneman grew up in Cleveland and received his Bachelor and Master degrees at now Case Western Reserve University. He then earned his PhD., degree at Purdue University and spent the next 32 years working in the field of Solid State Physics and Semiconductor Engineering. He did research on semiconductor materials and devices at Philco Corp., in Philadelphia, PA, was an Engineering Manager of Westinghouse Semiconductor Plant in Youngwood PA., Director of Research and Engineering of General Instruments Co., semiconductor plant in Newark, and President and CEO of Scientific Components Inc., of Linden, NJ. Dr. Borneman later sold know-how to Origin Denki Japan and was elected to the board of directors of the company. Ed Borneman was a volunteer with the Millburn Chapter of American Red Cross for over 25 years and most recently ran the monthly Red Cross Blood drive with his co-chair, John and Arlene O’Connor and Ron Melody. As a hobby he repaired and rebuilt violins and donated them to the youth program at NJSO. He is survived by a sister Irmagard and Harold Ringler of Lyndhuerst, Ohio, a brother Hugo H. and Eleanor Borneman, of Mobile, Alabama, one son from his first wife, Janet Alene (who died of Alzheimer’s disease in 1984), Jeffrey E. Borneman of Salt Lake City, UT. His other son Christopher H. Borneman, died in 2013 in Melbourne, Australia. He also has two step-sons from his marriage with Joan Koll Borneman, Donald and Barbara Vrahnos of Newton, NJ and Dr. Steven Vrahnos (deceased 2014) of Miami Beach, FL. He is also (along with Joan) the “American Parent” of concert pianist Makiko Hirata, currently working on her doctorate in music at Rice Univ., Houston, TX. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 from 4 to 8 pm at the Bradley Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, NJ.
