Charles Edward Spencer, Jr.

Charles E. Spencer, Jr. 82, of Chatham, New Jersey passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Overlook Hospital, Summit, NJ surrounded by his family.

Mr. Spencer was born in Brooklyn and moved to Madison in 1949. After his marriage he moved to Morristown and in 1966 to Chatham. He graduated from Bayley-Ellard High School and upon graduation entered the Christian Brothers in Metuchen. Upon leaving the brothers he joined the Navy. After his honorable discharge, he worked for Chubb and Sons in Short Hills and later the Madison Post Office until his retirement.

Charlie was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Chatham, where he sang in the church choir for a number of years. He belonged to the Parcells Council Knights of Columbus in Chatham serving as a Past Grand Knight. He was the former chairman of the Rose for Motherhood Program and the Baker’s Dozen Club, a member of MSGR John J. Sheerin Assembly 4th Degree serving as Past Faithful Navigator. He volunteered at Fosterfields in Morristown conducting school tours and served on the Board as President and other positions.

Charlie loved rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. In his earlier years, he stayed active by coaching his children’s youth sports programs and was an avid bowler until recently.

He is survived by his wife Edna (Betty Johnson) Spencer, five children; Charles III, Elizabeth, Elaine, William and Maria and her husband Anthony DeLuca of Clark and their two children Isabella and Christian. In addition, he is survived by two brothers, Donald and his wife Maureen of Cedar Crest and Robert and his wife Judith of Summit, NJ, sister-in-law, Patricia Johnson of Long Beach Island and two nephews and nine nieces.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 1-3 & 6-8 at Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Chatham, NJ 07928. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12:00 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2018 at St. Patrick’s Church, 85 Washington Avenue, Chatham, NJ 07928. Interment will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Madison, NJ. No flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Dominican Nuns, 543 Springfield Avenue, Summit, NJ 07901 or Friends of Fosterfields, 73 Kahdena Road, Morristown, NJ 07960.
