Betty Lou Farrell McCabe, of Short Hills, NJ and Fort Lauderdale, FL, passed away at her home surrounded by her family, on March 8, 2014 at the age of 86.

Betty Lou was born in Montclair, NJ, in 1927. She graduated from Cranford High School in 1945 and went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from Union Junior College in 1947.

Betty Lou is predeceased by her parents William R. Farrell and Isabel Wingate Humphrey, husband Joseph H. McCabe, Jr., a brother William Farrell and a sister Jessye Cameron. She is lovingly remembered by her son Joseph H. McCabe III and his wife Laura of Danville, VT, son William R. McCabe of Fort Lauderdale, FL, daughter Sissy McCabe of Short Hills, NJ, the daughter of her heart, Dagmar Peixoto; two grandsons, Joseph Calum McCabe and Eamonn Hunter McCabe; cousins Frances Laughlin and John Stubbs; nieces Nancy Lee Hill and Susan Cameron Bastien and nephew Scott Gordon Cameron.

Betty Lou was a member of Baltusrol Golf Club, Coral Ridge Country Club, Farmington Country Club and The Lauderdale Yacht Club. She was a member of the Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association and the Women’s New Jersey Golf Association and was recognized with Emerita membership status in 2010. She was an ardent supporter of the WNJGA’s outreach program to support Junior Girls’ golf. Betty Lou and her husband, Joseph, were also great supporters of the New Jersey State Golf Association. In recognition of this commitment, the net trophy in the NJSGA Mixed Pinehurst Championship is named in their honor. As an avid golfer, Betty Lou had success on the links, particularly at Baltusrol where she won a club championship and was the first recipient of the coveted title of Golfer of the Year. The McCabe Bowl is presented annually to the winners of Baltusrol’s Mother/Daughter competition and recognizes Betty Lou’s support of family golf.

Betty Lou was a parishioner of Christ Church in Short Hills, and All Saints Episcopal Church in Ft. Lauderdale.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 14, 2014 from 4-7pm at the Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, NJ. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 10:30 am at Christ Church, 66 Highland Ave., Short Hills.
