Bernard Weiss
09/11/1940 - 03/13/2017

Bernard “Bernie” Weiss passed away at Overlook Hospital, in Summit, New Jersey, on March 13, 2017. Bernie was born to Bernard and Frances (Byzinski) Weiss in Brooklyn, New York, on September 11, 1940. Raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, Bernie graduated from William Dickinson High School in Jersey City. He served in the Army Signal Corps, in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Bernie was part of the honor guard and held an expert badge in rifle.

Bernie was “hands-on” and mechanically inclined. He performed much of his own auto repair and maintenance work; even rebuilding the engine of his car.

After the Army, Bernie applied his radio technician skills into the early days of the computer age as a main frame computer specialist. His later career opportunities included both technical and sales positions in the computer industry. While holding a full time job and being husband and father, he completed his degree at night school in Business Administration, minoring in Electrical Engineering, from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Bernie was a HAM radio operator and enjoyed hearing stories about people in other places. To some degree, that method of relaying information as needed continued throughout his life; he loved to talk about his daughters to everyone he met.

Bernie also enjoyed his motorcycle, developed his own photographs, and never missed his wife’s pot roast.

He was a resident of Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, for forty-five years. Bernie was a member of American Legion Post 0119.

He is survived by and will be missed by his beloved wife of forty-seven years, Veronica (Witkowski) Weiss and daughters Jennifer and Andrea and sister, Carol Cole of Nitro, West Virginia.

The care and community of the Veterans system was significant to Bernie. It was the organization that took care of his health, reconnected him to a very valuable time in his life, and the brotherhood that his military service provided. In lieu of flowers, it is encouraged that family and friends donate to the Veterans Administration Lyons, New Jersey nursing home to benefit the older veterans.
