~~Anthony Edward Grumka, of Whippany, died at Morristown Memorial Medical Center on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. He was 82.

Known as Tony or Shimo to his friends and family, he was born in Whippany to Frank, Sr. and Elizabeth (nee Bankas) Grumka and was a life-long resident.

He proudly served in the US Army as a medic from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1960.

He and his wife Bonnie, owned and ran Tony’s Tavern in Whippany for 14 years until 1980. He then worked for Color Logic in Parsippany for 10 years until his retirement.

His hobby and joy of his life was flying homing pigeons, starting when he was 17. He was one of the top flyers of New Jersey, having over 400 wins. He moved to Florida for 3 years to fly for the Gulf Coast Pigeon Club. Locally, he was a member of the Lake Land, the Paterson and the West Side Homing Pigeon Clubs.

In his younger years, you could find him umpiring games in Orange and Morristown.

Shimo was also very active in local organizations. He was a member of the Polish American Club of Whippany, Parsippany-Troy Hills Elks Lodge #2078, Whippanong Post #155 of the American Legion and the Sons of the Amercian Legion in Whippany and Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Whippany.

He enjoyed traveling, going to Europe and many of the US states and cruising on ships to the Islands or Alaska. He loved being around people, eating out and hitting the dance floor whenever “That Old Time Rock n’ Roll” came over the speakers. He also enjoyed attending shows in Las Vegas and meeting the movie stars after the shows.

Tony is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years Bonnie (nee Johnson); his sister Joan Dunning (Leon) of New Mexico; sisters-in-law Louise Grumka of Texas, Elaine Grumka of Arizona and Mary Grumka of Wayne, NJ; his local nephews and nieces Bobby Grumka and his wife Kathy of Whippany, Marilou Teevan and her husband Pat of Hopatcong and Frank Grumka, Jr. and his wife Elaine of Parsippany and many other niece, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Bonnie’s nieces, Vannette Harmon and her husband Michael and Michelle Connor and her husband Ron, both of North Carolina.

Tony was pre-deceased by his son, Anthony, Jr.; his parents, Frank, Sr. and Elizabeth; his brothers, Eddie, Frank, Joe, Michael, Andrew and John; and his sister Anna Fanok.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Whippany Rd., Whippany on Monday, October 16, 2017 at 10:30 am. An interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Whippany. Friends may call at the Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home, 49 Whippany Rd., Whippany on Sunday from 5-8.
