Anne A. Bean
02/27/1920 - 06/06/2015

~~Anne Alexander Bean died peacefully on June 6, 2015, at the age of 88. She lived in Longboat Key, Florida and South Orange, New Jersey.

After graduating from Brown University in 1948, she married Kenneth Bean. She was married to her life-long love and best friend for 65 years. They moved to New Jersey where she taught elementary school for a time, but she preferred working with students one on one. After earning two masters degrees, one in learning disabilities from Bank Street College and one in education from Columbia University, she established a thriving practice as an educational therapist working from her home in Maplewood, N.J. She believed that her students, who had learning disabilities, were like the children of Lake Wobegon – “way above average”. She achieved marked success with many students, transforming their lives in the process.

Mrs. Bean played tennis and liked to walk in the town in which she lived. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and children. In retirement, she painted and took courses at the Education Center on Longboat Key.

Mrs. Bean was an active member of the Unitarian Church in Montclair in the 1960s and 1970s, after which she joined the Summit Unitarian Church.

Mrs. Bean was a devoted mother and wife. She leaves her loving sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas, Douglas, Elaine and Sue, her grandchildren Sam, Bradley and Emily, and her two sisters. Her husband preceded her in death.

A funeral in celebration of her life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the Bradley, Brough & Dangler Funeral Home, 309 Springfield Avenue, Summit, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Bank Street College of Education.
