Allen J. Vohden, Sr.

~~Allen J. Vohden Sr., 91, formerly of Millburn, NJ, Danville, VT, and more recently Newton, NJ, joined his beloved wife of 55 years, Joan Vohden, with the Lord on February 17, 2016 peacefully surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late John and Myrtle Vohden.

He was born August 17, 1924 in Union, NJ and served proudly as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during World War II after finishing first in his class at Midshipman’s School. After the war, Allen went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Penn State University and a Master’s Degree from Harvard University.

An Eagle Scout himself, Allen was admired for his mentorship for many years as the Scoutmaster for Troop 17 in Short Hills, NJ inspiring all of his sons to become Eagle Scouts. After a successful career in the paperboard industry, Allen and Joan realized their dream of retiring to Vermont and opening the Raspberry Patch B&B. He was an active member of his church and volunteered tirelessly at the local foodshare delivering meals to the needy for many years. He was always an avid outdoorsman and also enjoyed working in his massive vegetable and raspberry gardens. Allen and Joan cherished the summer family reunions at Groton State Forest as well as hosting holiday celebrations playing board games and cards with their grandchildren at their home in Danville. Allen and Joan particularly enjoyed traveling abroad as well as their travels to their special favorite destinations, Swan’s Island, Maine and Alaska in their RV.

Allen was predeceased by his adoring wife Joan and his brother Jay of Lakewood, NJ. He is survived by his five children: Pam Poland and her husband John of Linthicum, MD; Allen Vohden and his wife Judy of West Simsbury, CT; Jeff Vohden and his wife Mary of Chatham, NJ; Judy Sedlak of Basking Ridge, NJ; and Jim Vohden and his wife Jane of Fairbanks, AK. In addition, he leaves behind 13 grandchildren: Jenny Bowser and her husband Al; Joe Poland; Mike Poland and his wife Courtney; Kim Vohden and her fiancé Kevin DiBattisto; Allen (AJ) Vohden; Brian Vohden, Patrick Vohden and his wife Megan; Danny Vohden; Laura Sedlak; John Sedlak and his fiancée Nikki Ragonese; Kevin Sedlak; Annie Vohden; Karly Vohden; and 4 great –grandchildren: Payton Poland, Elisabeth Poland, Andrew Poland and Lily DiBattisto.

The family would like to express their warmest gratitude to the nurses and staff at the palliative care unit of Morristown Medical Center for their extraordinary compassion and professionalism.

Family and friends are invited to calling hours at the Wm. A. Bradley Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Chatham, New Jersey on February 19, 2016 between the hours of 4pm and 8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at 10:30am in St. Patrick Church, 85 Washington Ave, Chatham, NJ. Interment in Vermont will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers those wishing may make memorial donations to St. Labre Indian School, 1000 Tongue River Rd., Ashland, MT.
