William J. Portway, 88, of Millburn, New Jersey, passed away on Sunday, May 05, 2013 at Van Dyk Nursing Home, Montclair, NJ.


William was born on January 16, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William L. and Anna ( Higgins) Portway. He grew up in Jackson Heights, in Queens, NY.


Bill attended Regis High School in Manhattan and received a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Fordham University and a Master’s degree in Physics from Columbia University. He served in the Army during World War II. Bill spent his professional career as an engineer working on U.S. defense avionics for Cutler-Hammer on Long Island. Bill lived in Mineola, Long Island, NY for 30 years before moving to New Jersey. He enjoyed photography and loved to play golf. In retirement, he liked spending time at his home that he helped build on Seymour Lake in Morgan, VT.


He is predeceased by his loving wife, Helen Portway, in 2006. He is survived by his children William J. Portway, Jr. and wife Tanya of Upper Saddle River, NJ, Natalie Layer and husband Timothy of Millburn, NJ, and Thomas Portway and wife Zeynep of Oviedo, FL. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Noelle, and Grace Layer, and Liam Portway. He was predeceased by a brother, Thomas Portway.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30 a.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013 at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, 306 Morris Ave. Summit, NJ 07901. Visitation will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will follow in Mayrest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ
