Roger H Went

Roger H. Went, 95, of Bridgewater, N.J., formerly of Chatham Township, died on 1/27/18. Born in Summit, NJ., he was raised in Millburn and lived in Chatham Twp. for 35 years before moving to Columbus, NJ in 1988. He was a Lieutenant (JG) in the US Navy during WWII 1942-1945. As a dive bomber pilot aboard the U.S.S. Shangri-La, he was shot down off Kikai Jima when the battleship Haruna and cruiser Oyoda were sunk. Mr. Went was an Assistant Vice-President for Maplewood Bank & Trust Co., in Maplewood for 33 years, retiring in 1984. He attended Upsala College & American Institute of Banking. He served 9 years with the Chatham Twp. Athletic Assoc., and 12 years as a baseball manager. He started the CTAA soccer program, was chairman of Twp. Recreation Committee and developed the Shunpike Fields (3 baseball fields and 1 basketball court).

He was on the Board of Directors and Vice-President of Maplewood Chamber of Commerce, member of the Irvington Chamber of Commerce and of Sons of the American Revolution.

Roger was pre-deceased by his wife Ethel Maltby Went, brother Robert C. Went, and sister Joyce C. DesGeorges. He is survived by his children, Janet Skakum, Nancy (Jeff) Macaulay, son Douglas(Barbara) Went and grandfather of Sarah Craggs, Stephen Skakum, Jonathan Skakum, Caitlin Condon, Matthew Macaulay, Adam Went, David Went and seven great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11 am at Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, 240 Southern Blvd. Chatham Township, NJ, where Roger was a charter member.
