Richard E. Haeberle

Richard E. Haeberle, 78, of Summit and New Vernon, New Jersey passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at his home.

Born in Newark, lived in Maplewood, NJ and New Vernon before moving to Summit 35 years ago.

A graduate of Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ and New York Academy of Funeral Service. He was a partner of Haeberle & Barth Colonial Home, Union, NJ which was a firm started by his grandfather. He also co-owned Smith and Smith Suburban, Springfield and Brough Funeral Home, Summit. He retired in 2003 at which all three funeral homes were sold.

He was a member of the Funeral Directors Association of Essex, Union and West Hudson Counties. An avid classic car collector, he was a member of the Classic Car Club of America, Metro Region Classic Car Club, Lincoln Continental Owners Club, and the Two Hundred Club of Essex County. Richard was a member of the Elks Lodge #1583, Rod and Gun Club and Suburban Golf Club all of Union, NJ.

In his spare time, Richard enjoyed playing cards, especially playing gin rummy with his friends at Suburban Golf Club. He also loved going to his family home in Sebasco Estates, Maine.

He was the son of the late Richard and Eleanor Meyer Haeberle and brother of the late Barbara Tuttle. He was the cherished uncle of Elizabeth and James Heskett and Katherine and Dr. David Shepperly and the great uncle of Katherine Heskett and Paige and Spencer Shepperly.

A visitation will be 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Bradley, Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Avenue, Springfield, NJ 07081. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Christ the King Church, 16 Blue Mill Road, New Vernon, NJ 07976. Entombment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Morris County Right to Life, P.O. Box 52, Morristown, NJ 07963.
