~~Patrick (Packy) E. Whelan of Summit, NJ, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2017, after a brief illness. He was 80 years old. He is survived by his dear wife, Mary (Mimi) of 52 years, son, Matthew of Southborough, MA and his wife, Elana, and two grandchildren, Nolan and Kiley, as well as four sisters, Eileen Reilly of Carlisle, PA, Sheila McClaran of Southbury, CT, Anastasia Joelson of Arlington, VA, and Kathleen of New York City. He was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Julia Whelan of Cranford and Glen Ridge, NJ, his sister, Mary Ellen and brother Michael.
A graduate of Notre Dame (and avid fan) Packy obtained his JD degree at Catholic University in Washington, DC, where he clerked for the Honorable Joseph McGarry at the US District Court. Military service in the United States Air Force intervened before joining the IRS in New York City as an attorney in the Office of the Chief Counsel. He later served as Assistant District Counsel in the Office of Chief Counsel in Newark until his retirement in 2001.
Packy cherished his family, which also included numerous nieces and nephews. He loved his faith and friends, was an amazing story teller, and was always ready with a helping hand. Lectoring at his church and cycling with relatives in the tri-state area kept him very busy in retirement. His best rides were the RAGBRAI across Iowa and climbing Mont Ventoux in Provence, France.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Church, 234 Southern Blvd. in Chatham on Wednesday, October 18th at 11:30am. Interment will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Montclair. Friends are invited to visit at Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St. in Chatham on Tuesday from 4 to 8pm.
