Nancy D. Howie, 79, died on Friday, October 19, 2012.


Born in Scranton, PA, on November 26, 1932, as Nancy Rebecca Dean to Earle Wright Dean and Lillian Nesbit Dean, Mrs. Howie had also lived in Medford, MA, Clarks Summit, PA, and Newark, NJ before moving to Chatham Township, NJ, in 1955.


In 1952, Nancy Dean married Willard (Bill) Howie and raised two sons Rick and Don. Nancy remained married to her beloved husband Bill until his death in 1984. They were avid boaters and active members of the Cozy Cove Yacht Club in Island Heights, NJ.


A graduate of the Berkeley School, she had worked for Walter Kidde & Co. in Belleville and for the Superintendent of the School District of South Orange and Maplewood. In 1993, she retired as the Township Clerk of the Township of Chatham after serving the town for 28 years.


Nancy and Bill were both charter members of the Presbyterian Church of Chatham Township, which she served as Elder, Deacon, Historian, and long time member of the chancel and handbell choirs. Nancy served as the chair of the congregation’s 50th anniversary, coordinating a year-long celebration of the ministry of the church that culminated in a worship service of remembering in November 2009. Nancy was active in the Chatham Historical Society, the Republican club, Senior Services of the Chathams, CHIC investment club, AARP, and the Chatham Woman’s Club, among other organizations.


She was pre-deceased by her sisters, Lois-Jean Braen and Doris Scott. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Lydia Howie of Somers, NY, Don and Judy Howie of Chester NJ; two grandchildren, Dylan and Adam Howie of Somers, NY; plus seven nieces and nephews, four cousins, three grand nieces, and many dear friends.


The Howie family will be forever grateful for all of the support and friendship shown by our extended family and friends.
