Michael J. Heaney, 86, of Summit, died peacefully with his family at his side, on January 1, 2019. He was a 52 year resident and parishioner of St. Teresa of Avila Church. He served as the Summit Tax Assessor from 1966 to 1972, and on the Summit Board of Adjustment from 1977 to 1985, including two years as the board chairman. He studied commercial real estate at Rutgers University, and built a business as an independent commercial real estate appraiser and consultant. He was a member of the Appraisal Institute, holding the MAI and SRA designations. He served as president of the local New Jersey Chapter of the Institute.
He literally married the girl next door, his wife of 56 years, Carol. Michael is also survived by his sons Joseph of New York City and Michael of Samish Island, Washington; cherished grandchildren Ryan and Mary Kate; and his older brother James.
