Mary Ellen McCafferty, 96, of Springfield, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Chatham Hills Care Center, in Chatham. Born in Dungannon, County Tyone, Ireland, Mary came to the United States in 1953 and lived in Kearny, New Jersey for several years. She has lived in Springfield for the last 25 years. Mary enjoyed needlepoint, gardening and cooking. Predeceased by her husband Patrick McCafferty; brothers Frank, Vincent and Danny Casey; sisters Mona Cunningham and Sister Margaret Mary Casey; Mary is survived by her brothers Dermot Casey, Brendan Casey, Brian and Jerome Casey; and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at 10am at St. James the Apostle Church, 45 S. Springfield Ave., Springfield. Entombment will follow at St. Teresa Cemetery, Summit. Family and friends are invited to gather at the funeral home at 9am on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mary may be made to The Smile Train.
