~~Marlene R. Smith, 80, of Chatham Borough passed away at Avita Assisted Living in Newburyport, MA on June 11, 2015. A funeral service will be held at Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St, Chatham on Saturday, June 20th at 10am. Entombment will follow at Somerset Memorial Park. Friends are invited to visit on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm.

Born in New York City, the daughter of Lisle and Florence Rector, Marlene had also lived in Springfield before moving to Chatham in 1963. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Keuka College in Keuka Park, New York. Marlene was a Registered Nurse at Overlook Hospital for 27 years and later worked as a private duty nurse for 15 years. A longtime member of the Chatham United Methodist and the Friday Nighter’s Club, she also volunteered at the Summit Speech School. Marlene enjoyed gardening. She will be fondly remembered for her sense of humor and as a smart, organized and strong person who liked to take care of people.

Marlene was the beloved wife of the late William Smith. She was the mother of Deborah Lynn Caswell and William David Smith and is survived by her son-in-law Cas Caswell and daughter-in-law Gaye Smith. Marlene is also survived by her cherished grandchildren; Hilary Gaynor Smith, Jessica Mahlon Smith, and Diana Lin Caswell. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marlene’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 7 Ridgedale Avenue, Suite 103, Cedar Knolls, N.J. 07927.
