John V. Keena

John V. Keena, a long time resident of Whippany, died on Thursday, July 20, 2017 after a long illness. He was 88 years old. Born in Morristown, John moved to Whippany in 1939 and attended Whippany School. After graduation from Morristown High School in 1947, he enlisted in the US Army and served 4 years in the Aviation Engineers. He was a member of the American Legion. He married his beloved wife Susan Cecere in 1951, and was the proud father of 4 sons: John, Jamie, Brian and Thomas. He also leaves seven cherished grandsons, three granddaughters, and 6 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings Joseph Keena, Sheila Andrews, Lucy Pusey and Amelia Mager. John retired from Chubb Insurance Co after 31 years as a supervisor in the Loss Control Department. In 1962 he was elected to and served as a Commissioner on the Hanover Township Charter Commission Study. John joined the Whippany Fire Company in 1958 and was still an active member when he died. He served as Secretary and President, and at the time of his death was still serving as Vice President. He served as Lieutenant and Captain and served a three year hitch as Chief from 1971 to 1974. He was a Life Member of the NJ State Firemen’s Association and a member of the NJ State Fire Chief’s Association. He has a great interest in aviation, and at the age of 67 fulfilled a lifelong dream and earned his private pilots license. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 at 10am at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Whippany Rd., in Whippany. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Whippany. There will be a visitation on Monday from 4-8pm at the Bradley Braviak Funeral Home, 49 Whippany Rd., Whippany.
