Joann M. Porfiris

Joann M. Porfiris, 52, of West Orange, N.J. and formerly of Maplewood, N.J., died Thursday, Sept. 15, 2016 (at home after a courageous battle with cancer.)

Visitation is Monday, September 19, 2016 at Bradley Smith and Smith Funeral Home in Springfield, NJ between 1 and 3pm and 6 and 9pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday September 20, 2016 at 11:15 am at St Rose of Lima Church in Short Hills, NJ. Cremation will be private.

Born in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Leokadia and Zdzislaw Grajewski, Joann attended Queens College and spent her career in the food industry. She and her husband, George Porfiris, married in 1988. Together they owned and operated the Downtown Deli on Church Street in lower Manhattan, near City Hall, from 1992 to 2015.

Joann loved dogs and adopted many. She loved to cook, and was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Short Hills, N.J. She was a frequent presence on the sidelines at the sporting events of her two children, cheering on Emily, now a senior at Lehigh University, and Adam, a sophomore at Seton Hall Prep.

In addition to her husband, children, and mother, Joann is survived by her sisters, Alina Grajewski of Maplewood, N.J. and Wandzia Grajewski of Brooklyn.

Donations can be made in Joann’s Memory to the Carol G. Simon Cancer Center in Summit, New Jersey.
