~~Helena Kowalczyk, 89, of Flanders passed away at home, surrounded by her loving family, on December 21, 2015. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 537 Grove St in Irvington on Monday, December 28th at 10:00am. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit at Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home, 49 Whippany Rd, Whippany on Sunday from 4 to 8pm. Born and raised in Rokiciny Poland, Helena and her family came to the United States in 1965. First settling in Newark and later Irvington, she moved to Flanders 20 years ago. In Poland, life was difficult for Helena and her family. She and her 8 siblings lost their father when she was 4 years old. During WWII, Helena’s mother and two of her brothers were executed by the Nazi’s, and she also lost her oldest sister who died at the age of 18.

Helena was a long time, devoted parishioner of Sacred Heart. She enjoyed Knitting, crocheting, gardening and in her younger years dancing and singing.

Helena was the beloved wife of the late Karol Kowalczyk,. She was the loving mother of Sophia Kozak and her husband Gene, Stan Kowalczyk and his wife Kim and the late John Kowalczyk and his wife Theodora. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and her sister, Sophie Bartkowski. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helena’s memory may be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
