Hartwig J. Schlobohm, of Chatham, died on July 2, 2012 surrounded by his family. He was 76.


Born in Nesse, Germany, Hartwig immigrated to the United States in 1954 and enlisted in the US Army as a Tank Commander. Hartwig was stationed in Crailsheim, Germany, during which time he began dating his beloved wife of 53 years, Ingeborg (nee Christians). The couple lived in Chatham after marrying in Germany in 1959.


A butcher by trade, Hartwig eventually became the Meat Supervisor for ShopRite, Village Supermarkets Inc., a position he held for 30 years.


Hartwig was an avid outdoorsman and was Vice President of the Cat Hollow Hunt Club in Liberty. He enjoyed gardening and was particularly fond of his prized roses. He was a Mason at the Essex County Lodge #7 for 50 years and was also a member of the Farcher’s Grove German Club.


Hartwig was the beloved husband of Ingeborg. He is predeceased by his brother Karl, and is survived by his brother Arno and sister Marion. Also surviving are Hartwig’s son Dr. Mark Schlobohm and his wife Diana (nee Bennett) of Chatham; son Dr. Cord Schlobohm of Bethesda, Maryland; grandchildren Cord, Christian, Cristina, and the late Sydney Schlobohm; and his beloved hunting dog, Niko.


A Memorial Visitation will be held on Friday, July 6 from 4-6 pm with a Memorial Service at 6 pm at the Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Chatham.
