Gerald R. Baumgartner, 74, of Chatham, New Jersey passed away Saturday, October 19, 2013 peacefully at home surrounded by his family.
Gerald was born on August 23, 1939 in Olwein, Iowa. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Emil and Elizabeth (nee Beyerlein) Baumgartner.
Gerald grew up in Strawberry Point, Iowa and attended Iowa State University, Ames, IA. He graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Beta Sigma Psi fraternity and a member of Cardinal Key honors society. Gerald lived in Walton-on-Thomas and Richmond, England for many years.
He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Chatham, NJ and was a Teller at the church. Gerald enjoyed traveling in Europe and Asia for both work and pleasure. He also loved sailing and spending time with his family. Gerald worked for Exxon, beginning as an engineer at Bayway Refinery in 1961, later worked at Exxon International in New York in 1973, transferred to London to work at Esso Europe in 1978, where he held a variety of managerial roles in logistics and returned in 1984 to Florham Park where he again held several managerial positions. In 1994, moved to London, where he worked for Esso UK until 1996. He returned to NJ to work at Exxon Headquarters in Florham Park and retired in 1997.
He is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Virginia Baumgartner. He is also survived by three sons: Jeffrey Baumgartner of Erps-Kwerps, Belgium, Phillip Baumgartner of New York City, NY, and Edward Baumgartner of London, England. He is also survived by a sister, Erma Clausing.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 24, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 300 Shunpike Road, Chatham, NJ 07928.
