George B. Fisher, Jr.

George Bernays Fisher, Jr, 88, of Short Hills passed away at his home on September 22nd. A Funeral Service will be held at Wyoming Presbyterian church, 432 Wyoming Ave, in Millburn on Thursday, September 27th at 1:00pm. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.


Born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, George moved to Short Hills in 1971. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Washington University in St. Louis.


George served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII, in China and during the Korean Conflict. He continued to serve in the U.S. Navy Reserves for another 20 years. George began his career in retailing at Stix, Baer & Fuller in St. Louis. In 1971, upon moving to New Jersey, he worked as an executive with Hahne’s Department Store in Newark, Livingston and Westfield. He retired in 1988. George was a member of the Canoe Brook Country Club and the Washington University Alumni Association. He enjoyed travel, the stock market, cooking and fine cuisine.


George is survived by his devoted sons, George Fisher III, and Robert Fisher and his wife Jane, his long-time companion Barbara Van Vliet, and his cherished grandchildren, Daniel, Laura, Ellen, and Michael. In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to the Millburn, Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad, 188 Glen Ave, Millburn, NJ 07041
