Francis P. Gallagher

Fran “Red” Gallagher, 83, of Union, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Overlook Hospital, Summit.


Born in Newark, Fran was raised in Irvington. He attended Seton Hall University, and in 1973, opened up the Gallagher Insurance Agency in Springfield. He has lived in Union since 1968. he was a veteran of the US Army, during peacetime.


Fran coached Springfield American Legion Baseball in the 80’s. Fran was an All-State Catcher in 1947 and 1948 for the Irvington Campers and helped lead Irvington to the 1947 Greater Newark Tournament championship and then played at Seton Hall University.


Fran is predeceased by his siblings Thomas and Joseph Gallagher, and Mary Rollery. He is survived by his former wife, Mary; children Francis P. Jr., Eric and Michael Gallagher; step children Kevin, Shannon and Patrick Kelly; grandchildren Stephanie, Samantha, Sarah, Logan and Finn Gallagher; and sister Rose Marie Bauer.


A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, January 30, 2013 at 10am at St Rose of Lima Church, 50 Short Hills Ave., Short Hills, NJ 07078. Interment will follow at Hollywood Memorial Park, Union. There will be a visitation on Wednesday from 6-9pm at the Bradley Smith & Smith Funeral Home 415 Morris Ave., Springfield, NJ 07081. in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Rose of Lima Church.
