Elvira “Ellie” Metta (Fernicola) passed away at home  on Dec 29, 2020. She was 88.  Ellie was born and raised in Newark and graduated from South Side High School where she served as editor of the school newspaper.  She lived in Union for 47 years before moving to New Providence. Ellie was the Assistant Personnel Director at United Hospitals of Newark for many years. She also work briefly at Overlook Hospital in the respiratory therapy department before retiring. She was predeceased by her husband, Amilio “Mel” Metta, her parents Sam and Mildred Fernicola (Anzella), and her brother Frank Fernicola. She is survived by her daughters Joanne Metta-Sullivan (Paul) and Monica Metta. Her greatest joy in life were her grandchildren, Dan Sullivan (Kristen Lucid) and Nicole Sullivan. She loved spending time with them. She is also survived by Joanne’s step-son Ryan Sullivan (Becki) and their children James and Brynn. Her last days were filled with joy as she watched them play. Ellie was a kind and caring person who was always willing to lend a hand to others in need. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and will be missed by all.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 9 am to 10 am at the Bradley Smith & Smith Funeral Home, 415 Morris Ave. Springfield, followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Peace Church, 111 South St. New Providence, NJ at 10:30 am.  In lieu of flowers please make donations to any Vietnam Veteran’s America or St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.  For and family and friends that are unable to attend, the Mass will be live streamed.
