Ellen (Piuko) Maier, of Union, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2013. She was 85 years old.
Ellen was a graduate of Montclair State University and earned her Bachelors in English Literature. Following her graduation, she spent some time teaching English in the Chatham school system before starting her family.
Ellen spent most of her life in Union until she and her husband retired to their family home in Point Pleasant, NJ, in 1990. Ellen was a strong and industrious woman, always finding a way to help out at her husband’s butcher shop while raising their two daughters at home.
Rare though it was, Ellen’s free time was enjoyed tending to her garden, where she grew flowers of all sizes and of every color in the rainbow. She also had a love for traveling. Trips to Bermuda are among the most cherished family memories, and Ellen’s adventures brought her as far as Germany, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, and Turkey.
Ellen is predeceased by her loving husband of 40 years, the late Alfred C. Maier; her parents, Joseph and Irma Piuko; and her brother, the late Joseph Piuko, Jr. She leaves behind her two beloved daughters, Sue Maier of Union, NJ, and Christine Hornick and her husband Steven Jr. of Clifton, NJ; as well as two loving grandchildren, Steven Hornick III and Jennifer Hornick.
