Ellen C Cobane

Ellen C. Cobane, 93, died on July 8, 2012 at Morris View Nursing Home. She was born in Harrison, NJ to Otto (Adolph) and Sarah Maguire Mayer and raised there, until moving to Whippany in 1950. Ellen was employed by RCA in Harrison for many years. She was a crossing guard for the Hanover Twp. Police Dept., proudly wearing badge #38. Later employed by the Hanover Twp. Bd. of Ed. as a bus driver for deaf and blind students. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 5351 and was the oldest living member, she served as President of the Ladies Aux. from 60-62. Ellen also was a Gold Star mother and received it because she raised her brother, Thomas C. who was killed in action during the Korean War, after their mother died when Ellen was 13. Her volunteerism with veterans’ organizations was a tribute to her brother. She was past State Chairwoman of VA Hospitals and also volunteered countless hours at the Lyons VA Hospital.


Previously deceased are her husband Samuel C. Cobane (1998) and her brothers Frederick and Pvt. Thomas Mayer. Survived by son Robert Cobane Sr. and his wife Patricia of Whippany and daughter Ellen Hulsen and her husband Walter of Bridgewater. Grandmother of 6 and great grandmother of 10. Also surviving is a sister Agnes Boyle of Flordia.


A funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Whippany Rd., on Wednesday July 11 at 11:00am. Friends may call at the Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home, 49 Whippany Rd. Whippany on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to Ladies Auxiliary Post 5351 PO Box 183 Whippany NJ 07981.
