~~Elizabeth Ann Tunny, “Betty”, 83, of Chatham passed away at King James Care Center on January 23, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick Church, 85 Washington Ave, Chatham on Thursday, January 29 at 10:30am. Interment will follow at Fair Mount Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit at Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home, 345 Main St, Chatham on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm.

Born in Brooklyn and raised in Belle Harbor, Betty graduated from St. Agnes High School in Brooklyn. She graduated from the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station with a degree in education and moved to Chatham in 1957. In 1974 she started a pre-school program at St. Patrick Church. She was then employed by the Chatham School District for over 20 years as a teacher’s aide, teacher, and librarian. Betty was a member of the St. Patrick Rosary Society, the Chatham Interfaith Community, the St. Elizabeth Alumni Assoc., Morris County Teacher’s Assoc., the National Education Assoc. and the Chatham P.T.O. She enjoyed attending Irish Theatrical Presentations at Seton Hall, and her children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She was an avid bridge player and loved puzzles and board games. Betty will be fondly remembered as a wonderful, caring person with an outgoing personality who loved to make people happy.

Betty was the beloved wife for 60 years of James Tunny. She was the loving mother of Jim and wife Ellen, Margaret Nilson and husband Geoff, Betty Bodenweiser and husband Steve, Joan Matyus and husband Steve, Mary Weichert and husband William, John and wife Beth, and Eileen Turrisi and husband Jeff. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren; Beth, Jim, Colin, Sarah, Brendan, Stephen, Shelby, Annie, Emily, Willy, Claire, Jack, Rachel and Joey, and her dear brother Jack Farrell. Her sister Joan Sangimino died previously. In lieu of flowers, donations in Betty’s memory may be made to either St. Paul’s Abby in Newton, NJ, the Alzheimer’s Association of NJ, 400 Morris Ave, suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834 or the Chatham Emergency Squad, 45 Spring St., Chatham, NJ 07928.
