Born in Orange, the daughter of Joseph W. and Elizabeth J. (Hillenbach) Gromek, Betty had also lived in East Orange and Elizabeth before moving to Colonia in 1964. A graduate of East Orange High School, she was a founding member of the Delta, Epsilon Sorority and was the only surviving member. Betty was a graduate of the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts and the Parsons School of Design in New York City. She worked as a Color Quality Control Agent with Norcross Greeting Card Company in NYC for many years. Besides her natural ability to draw and illustrate fashion design, Betty loved arts and crafts, calligraphy, and challenging puzzles. Her fond memories of childhood summers vacationing in Bradley Beach New Jersey inspired her to purchase a home in Bethany Beach, Delaware, where she and her husband John created new memories with the rest of the family. Thanksgiving at the beach is still a tradition lasting almost 30 years.
Betty is the beloved wife of 44 years to the late John R. Novack. She was the loving mother of Holly Johnson and her husband C. Lars and Robin Tottis and her husband Gary. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Benjamin and Krista Johnson and Nicholas and Emily Tottis, cousins, Leila Hillenbach Prior, Carole Gromek Moelk, and Tony “Butchie” Gromek, and goddaughter, Linda Vail, and her beloved granddog, Cassidy. Donations in Betty’s memory may be made to Deborah Heart and Lung Center, 200 Trenton Rd, Browns Mills, NJ 08015 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
