Dorothy M. (Spitzer) Mensinger, 88, died on November 18, 2012 in Edgewood, RI where she had resided for the last two years to be closer to family. She was born in Newark, raised in Maplewood and moved to Whippany with her family in 1955. Dorothy attended grade school at St. Joseph’s School in Maplewood, and graduated from Columbia High School in South Orange in 1942.
She married her husband J. Harold Mensinger in 1945, and was devoted to him throughout her life. She and her husband raised three children, and her home in Whippany was the site of many extended family celebrations andgatherings for over 55 years.
In addition to her household and family responsibilities, Dorothy was employed as the receptionist at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel Church in Cedar Knolls for 38 years. She served on the Board of Trustees at Notre Dame from 1979 to 1998, and was very active in Church activities, a member of both the Rosary Altar Society and the Benedictine Mother’s League of St. Mary’s Abbey in Morristown. She also took part in the activities of the Hanover Township Senior Citizens Club.
She is survived by her son John (wife Nancy Brittain) of Edgewood, RI, her daughter Christine (husband William) Bennett of Pembroke, Ontario, and her son Michael (wife Patricia) of Long Valley, NJ. She was the loving grandmother of Steven, James and Geneva, and the sister of Lorraine Laufhutte of Maplewood. Also surviving are nephews Robert and Jeffrey Laufhutte and niece Anita Roberts.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday December 1 at 9:30am at Notre Dame of Mt. Carmel Church, Ridgedale Avenue, Cedar Knolls. Friends may call at the Bradley-Braviak Funeral Home, 49 Whippany Road, Whippany on Friday November 30 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.
